Chapter 7

Jacob took her hand to lead her away, even though Vivienne was still fuming. She hadn’t been listening to a word he said, so a different approach was called for. He spotted Trace and strode over to him. “Vivienne and I are leaving,” he said, without preamble.

Trace didn’t react adversely, as it wasn’t the first time that Jacob had left a party early. Lana looked at Jacob, surprised. But she didn’t comment.

“You and Lana take the limo home,” Jacob said. “We’ll catch a cab.” Then he stalked off with Vivienne in tow.

“We’re leaving?” Vivienne said. “But it’s your party.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

In the elevator, Jacob was silent, not wanting to argue in public. Vivienne stood stiffly next to him, but didn’t withdraw her hand. The fact that she wouldn’t look at him spoke volumes. At the front of the hotel, a cabbie flagged them over, and ushered them into the back seat.

The ride home wasn’t nearly as pleasant as the ride earlier in the evening. There was no champagne or joviality, and Trace wasn’t there to lighten the mood. It was just Jacob and Vivienne at a standoff. She showed no signs of relenting.

Once they arrived and went up to the penthouse, Vivienne spun to face him. She had her mask pushed back, so it was over the back of her hair with the elastic around her neck. Jacob had already taken his mask off, so just tossed it aside. Then he removed his jacket, ready to do verbal battle.

“I guess you like them blond and with green eyes.” Vivienne was terse, her demeanor challenging. “Although I’m probably deficient in the cleavage department.”

Jacob was pissed that she assumed he was that shallow. “You have better legs,” he said, moving toward her.

“And that’s supposed to make me feel better?”

“No, it’s not. What should make you feel better is that I’m with you now.”

Vivienne lifted her chin. “Don’t do me any favors.”

“That’s what you think…that I go through green-eyed blondes, one after the other, like the flavor of the week?” Jacob’s voice was stern. He needed to reel this in, as Vivienne was way off base with this.

“I don’t know what to think.” Vivienne looked up at him. “So why did you and Anna break up?”

“I told you…I don’t do long-term relationships.” Jacob thought that was obvious.

Vivienne glared at him. “But what happened between you?”

“I ended it.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know…I just did.” Jacob held his position, unflinching.

“I take it that Anna wasn’t happy about it?”

“No, she wasn’t.” Jacob glowered down at her. “But that has nothing to do with you.”

“It has everything to do with me,” Vivienne said. “I heard her say that she expected you to be there tonight. That can only mean one thing: she wants you.”

“That’s her problem.” Jacob took a deep breath. “I’ll repeat what I just said: it has nothing to do with you.”

Vivienne seemed to calm, but only slightly.

“Annaliese must have been someone’s date tonight. I didn’t know she’d be there, and wouldn’t have cared, anyway.” Jacob forced his body to calm before he got out of control.
